Police Tactics

In many countries it is illegal to use lethal force to control riots

Riots are classically managed by the local police, supported by specially trained and equipped officers experienced in riots and crowd control

In extreme cases the National Guard or Army may be tasked to assist police
-
These are deployed at high risk events e.g demonstrations, foot ball matches etc.

Riot police can be used to be highly visible at demonstrations or remain behind the scenes in reserve until trouble starts
-
Riot police use a number of tactics ranging from mere presence, to crowd dispersal and the use of necessary force
-
Various tactic are used throughout the world including the classic 'parallel line formation' as shown below, to the more advanced use of 'eschelons' of officers (group of 10-12) working together in designated teams
