Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Course (PHEC)

Review

The three day course run by BASICS which can be done either in Sheffield or Cambridge is an intense residential course; staffed by experienced pre-hospital care practitioners from all walks of life. It can be seen as a stand lone course or used as a stepping stone to the advanced PHECC and thereby preparing you for the Diploma in Immediate Care (DIMCRCSEd).

The course is intended to suit all providers with both trauma and medical emergencies and recognises that these are often inter-related in the pre-hospital arena. It is regulated by the Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and successful completion of the course results in certification by the College.

Over the 3 days various aspects are covered ranging from extrication, the organisation and structure of the emergency services, scene management, patient assessment and treatment of various emergencies. Within this are incorporated advanced life support and advanced trauma management. The 3 days culminate in a written paper and 2 moulages; one medical and one trauma.

I would recommend the course to anyone who is involved or interested in becoming involved in pre-hospital care. The faculty are first class and the social element to the course certainly iced the cake.
