Major Incident Medical Management & Support (MIMMS)

 

Review

The MIMMS course is aimed at personnel who will be involved with Major incidents including emergency services, medical and nursing staff. It is highly relevant to military medics.


The course includes:
- Definitions of Major Incidents
- The role of the Police, Fire and Ambulance services.
- The role of Medical Commander, Nursing Commander and Ambulance Commanders including forward officers.
- The organisation of an incident around Bronze, Silver and Gold areas.
- The key aspects of a structured approach based on the CSCATTT mnemonic
(Command, Control, Safety, Communication, Assessment, Triage, Treatment and Transport)
- Declaration of a major incident using the METHANE structure.
(Major incident declared, Exact location, Type, Hazards, Access, Number of casualties, Emergency services)
- Activities within the Bronze inner cordon
- Activities within the Silver area, including command and control, the casualty clearing station and ambulance circuit.
- Triage based on Sieve and Sort.

The structure of the course includes lectures, developed table top exercises, practical training including radio use and triage techniques. The course finishes with 1 or 2 Practical Exercises
Without Casualties (PEWCs) working in groups outside putting all the training together.

The certification of the course is via continual assessment and a multiple choice exam paper on the course generally and triage.There is a course manual, and guide book. This is an ALSG course. There are also other related courses including SIMMS (Special Incident) relating to chemical incidents and Hospital MIMMS.

This course is useful to Hospital Staff involved in mobile medical teams or involved in a management role regarding major incidents. It is also useful to all emergency service staff and is intended to demonstrate the inter-agency approach to major Incidents. The course is highly recommended for candidates for the DIMC RCSEd
