Introduction to Tactical Emergency Medical Support Course (I.T.E.M.S)
This two day course is hosted by PHC UK and run by the Essex Police Firearms Group. It takes place at the Chelmsford Headquarters Police Training College and is an intense non-residential course. It is staffed by experienced medical staff from the Essex Police Tactical Firearms Group and other Emergency Service Personnel. It can be taken as a stand alone course and is a great introduction into Tactical Medicine.
The course is aimed at all pre-hospital care providers interested in learning more about the subject of tactical medicine. Previous delegates who have attended the course include - Doctors, Paramedics, Emergency Medical Technicians, British Red Cross, Search & Rescue, Military and Medical / Paramedic Students. Completion of the course results in a joint certifcate issued by PHC UK and the Essex Police Tactical Firearms Group.
Over the 2 days various aspects of tactical medicine are covered ranging from the TARDIS approach, tactical planning, equipment and drugs used in tactical environments, weaponary and the management of gunshot injuries etc. The course also encorporates skills stations and mock exercises with members of the firearms team. " Tactical medicine is becoming an increasingly 'hot topic' in the arena of Pre-Hospital Care. From the outside it seems an exciting area of medicine to get involved with and to learn more about. However, whilst on the course I learnt how vast and complex the subject of tactical medicine is. It is not merely about the management of gun shot wounds, fancy kit and armoured vehicles. Yes there is an element of this, but it is primarily about 'tactics and planning'. Medicine has the supportive role, and when this is lost mistakes are made and the very essence of tactical medicine is destroyed.
A great introductory course for learning more about Tactical Medicine. "
